I wanted to show the Wild Violet as compared to the Larkspur. The wild Violet is a great Foraging plant. Larkspur is Toxic. This is an example of how easy it would be for a beginner to make a fatal mistake. Violets are rich in vitamins A & C. They could be used to help prevent Scurvy. Larkspur on the other hand could bring an abrupt end to your bushcraft days. Always double check your Guide books & if in doubt leave it out.

Welch West Virginia is a wonderful place and it is bigger than you think. We did not have time to get all of this town but we will get more later. It is a great place to go for a drive. There are some very old shops and restaurants. The biggest surprise about Welch was it's ability to hang on to the old and make way for the new. We saw this in the newer construction under way and the exiting older buildings. Welch lies along the historic Coalfield Route 52 in Southern West Virginia.

Also a special thanks goes out to The Mayhem String band, YouTube's own Jeff Williams, and Nashville songwriter Betsy Ulmer for allowing us to use their music for this project. This town was Virginia's first coal boom town. There are very few Americans who have not been touched by the far reaching influence of the Pocahontas Fuel Company. The coal extracted by Pocahontas Fuel served nearly 1/2 of the country. The numerous mines once employed nearly 100000 people and it was all headquartered here in this small town in the mountains. Many awesome historic buildings and sites in this town face demolition by neglect unless something changes.

The Cook-Off might best be described as West Virginias culinary trade fair. Just as Tamarack showcases the artists and artisans of the state, the Cast Iron Cook-Off showcases its culinary talent and attractions. Cook-Off judges include such national and international culinary celebrities as the Lee Anne Wong from Bravos Top Chef. Rod Stoner, winner of the West Virginia Tourism life-time achievement award, is also a member of the judging panel. In addition to approximately 450 in-state business leaders, key legislators, and culinary celebrities attending the gala dinner , we expect dignitaries to include the First Lady, the Secretary of Commerce and Commissioners of Agriculture and Tourism.
