In the middle of California's Bay Area, a ranching family provides a haven for wildlife and endangered species. The family's management practices have not only improved rangeland health, but is a prime example of the conservation ethic that has been instilled over generations in the ranchers who manage the lands today -- and the love of the land that is being passed on to their children.

The Clinch River has more species of endangered freshwater mussels than any other river in North America. Elementary school students from Cleveland, VA, participated in the event, and learned about the many functions of mussels, including providing habitat for fish, becoming food for many other animals, and filtering and cleaning the water in our streams and rivers. Over 3500 federally-endangered mussels were produced at the Department's Aquatic Wildlife Conservation Center in Marion, Virginia.

This is an example of how easy it would be for a beginner to make a fatal mistake. Violets are rich in vitamins A & C. They could be used to help prevent Scurvy. Larkspur on the other hand could bring an abrupt end to your bushcraft days. Always double check your Guide books & if in doubt leave it out.
